Schotland 6...slot...

11 augustus 2009

We started our return journey, which will go through Leuchars, Berwick upon Tweed (England again),
Holy Island, and then Alnwick Castle,
to end on the boat which will sail us back on the night of 14 august...

Today we'll go to our first host in Leuchars where we will stay for one night.
After coffee and lunch in Earl's Hall and hearing our story's, we were going to St. Andrews, we wanted to go to the beach, but the weather wasn't that good,
yes really, we had a little rain for the first time...
so we went to the castle...well...more of a ruin...

After we bought a lovely 'windbrella' (you have to buy a good umbrella when you're in Scotland), we had dinner by a sweet restaurant, went to the beach ,
just above Leuchars, and enjoyed the fresh air, great!

The next day it was time to say goodbye to our wonderful friends with pain in our hearts...
but not before our host drove for a while with our two boys in his Bentley from 1928.
He also drove his Rolls Royce Woody outside the gate, proud as he was of his old cars.
My two boys had the time of there lives because our host had also drove car rallies in the past with his wife, so he kicked the gas well...

Our goal for this day was Berwick upon Tweed (England), which was a half  an hour drive from Alnwick Castle, where we planned to go the next day before going up the boat.
With help from the local tourist office we found a lovely B&B,
because this part of our journey wasn't filled in yet.
From our friendly host we got the tip to drive to Holy Island., the way to the island runs under when the flood comes (just like Le Mont-Saint-Michel in France).
It was beautiful there and sunny...again another gift ;)

After a good night sleep, the moment was there, the boys almost couldn't wait...
thè castle from the movies from
Harry Potter
Alnwick Castle.

Here was the film 'The Philosopher's Stone' recorded, so our kids recognised  many things.
The lessons on the broomstick...
If you Google at Alnwick Castle & Harry Potter, you see a lot of pictures coming by.
It was very impressive and there were also many things to do for our kids inside, knights Quest, a big chessplay, Dragons Quest etc.

Alnwick Castle is in possession of the PERCY family for the last 700 years.
The 12th Duke lives there now with his family.
We followed a tour through the 'state rooms' (photography is strictly prohibited).
We didn't know where to look...
so incredibly beautiful, the ceilings, the library (that itself was as big as a house), we've never seen anything so gorgeous.

So this photos here above and belowe aren't mine, but I took them from my Pinterest board
(Castles & Interior) to give you a bit of impression...
Impressive isn't it?
And this is only 1/3 of the castle which we've seen...
The other photos of the flowers and the gardens I did make myself.

In the afternoon we also wanted to see the gardens of Alnwick Castle.
We already heared that fase 1 of this gardens cost 16 million pounds...

A huge fountain, a labyrinth of bamboo, 300 species of roses, a beautiful beech hedge, a toxic garden, not a treehouse but a treeVILLAGE, we didn't know where to look...

After we left in the late afternoon to Newcastle to get our boat in time, we were still impressed about this relatively short vistit to this show place...

gewoon in Nederland...bijna thuis...

Fijn weekend.
Alle liefs, MJ  X

At 17:00 we went on board and after a quiet seenight we arrived at IJmuiden...
again in Holland...almost home...
but for me it took a few weeks to really 'land' and get HOME!
That's why I created with great pleasure a photobook with 130 pages with which we still can enjoy our adventures.
I lent the book lots of times to people who doubted to go to Scotland for their holidays.
The pictures alway took their doubt away ;)
It has become a precious document, just as these posts on my blog are now...
I want to thank you very much for all your lovely reactions and nice comments, it's so good to read.
Who knows where we'll be our next holiday...

Nice weekend.
Love, MJ  X

Herfstkrans...

This afternoon I went by bike to the forest to cut some branches for the autumn wreath I wanted to make.

Gewoon op ijzerdraad dus niet te moeilijk...

Just wire not to difficult...

But then again I'm facing a dilemma...
What can I put in the middle of the wreath, when it's on a beautiful scale?

Wat denken jullie?

What do you think?

Mmm...this one fits beautifully on the wicker basket with my pillows...

Ok...did make a choice ;) hope you like it too...

xx  Een herfstige groet, MJ  xx

Bijkeuken...

Jeanne d' Arc zeepbakje gekocht in Alkmaar.

After we built a 2,5 meter extra at our home in 2007, which caused that we also realised a pantry,
that pantry was usually a mess.
There stood a big glass tank with two gerbils (desert rats), towels laying somewhere, and so where the     wipes, brushes, soap, pots and washing powder etc...

But...this summer passed the last gerbil away, regrettable, but my sons are now of an age that they don't want to start over again...(she said happily ;).

So...that was the sign...clearing up!!!

Opgeruimd staat netjes ;)

I am so happy with the result, and everything is cleaned up and stands or hangs.
We also have a black and white checkered tile floor, so it all fits lovely together.
Happy with the job done ;)

xx    Fijne week, liefs MJ    xx

Schotland 5...

7 augustus 2009

After saying goodbye to Fort William, our journey went to Lochearnhead.
Ofcourse we are way to early again at our B&B 'Tigh Na Crich' but we always solve this by combining our lunch with sightseeing.
We ride around Loch Earn, there are many boats on the water and lots of people fishing on 'Strout'

This B&B from John & Irene Tippett was the most beautiful one we stayed in.
On the outside you couldn't see the castle influences on the inside.
Beyond that, John & Irene were the most welcoming B&B owners we met
(although they were all very friendly and kind)
It's a pity that I wasn't into photography as I am today, because I made way to few photos.
I also have some with my family, that I don't want to use...
But still...I hope you get a good impression...

De B&B was so relaxed (nice cup of coffee or tea, some cookies and chocolate) that we stayed there for the afternoon and looked Braveheart on DVD. That was really nice because we could recognize some hotspots in the movie, and we would go to Stirling Castle the next day where the story about William Wallace and Robert de Bruce took place.

The whole castle was under construction because of a big renovation, so we didn't see a lot, but the guide was a good entertainer and made a few bad jokes about the american Mel Gibson, who played the scot William Wallace.
We've heard a lot that the movie was way to romantic...but hey...it must also have a kind of nice look...;)

De distel...het nationaal symbool van Schotland...

The thistle...the national symbol of Scotland...

After our farewell from John & Irene (snif) we drove to Doune Castle where they made 'Monty Python'.
There was a real troubadour singing and playing...

After we put our luggage in our hotel (this was the only time we hadn't had a B&B) we drove to PERTH for the highland games.

This typical scottisch dance (and yes, the second from the left is a boy) was really heavy, we watched this with our mouth open...

It was very crowdy in Edinburgh because of the Military Tattoo, so we went to a big parking place, and took the bus from there to the centre, and then walked to the castle.
It was a warm day and my love was happy he hadn't have to drive left in this (especcially now) busy city.

It was worth seeing but we do love the beauty and rest of the countryside more...

Next time the last post from our tour through Scotland.
We'll go by our friends in Leuchars and to the castle of Harry Potter...

xx  Lovely greetings, MJ  xx
